WPL 2026: The Fairytale Comeback of Sayali Satghare - From Net Bowler to RCB's Match-Winner

The Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 has been a tournament of dreams for many, but no story is quite as captivating as that of Sayali Satghare. The seam-bowling all-rounder for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has not just performed; she has announced her arrival on the big stage with a string of match-winning spells. Her journey from being an unsold player and a net bowler to becoming a pivotal reason for RCB's unbeaten run and playoff qualification is the stuff of cricketing fairytales .

From Giant Detour to Royal Homecoming

The 2026 season was supposed to be different for Satghare. Having earned her India cap, the 25-year-old Mumbaikar entered the mega auction with high hopes. However, fate dealt a cruel blow when she went unsold. It was a moment that would break many, but for Satghare, it was just another twist in a winding road .

Her connection with RCB, however, runs deep. A self-confessed fan of the franchise since the IPL's inception in 2008, she had previously been a net bowler for them. Her WPL journey had a false start when she was signed by the Gujarat Giants (GG) as a replacement in 2024, becoming the league's first-ever concussion substitute, followed by a retention in 2025 . When the Giants released her, it seemed her fairytale might be over. But when RCB's star all-rounder Ellyse Perry withdrew from the 2026 edition due to personal reasons, the franchise didn't have to look far. They brought Satghare "back home" .

A Dream Debut for RCB

Satghare had to wait for three games to get her chance, but when it came against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, she seized it with both hands. Coming in to bowl the second over, she built on the momentum created by English pacer Lauren Bell. Satghare announced herself by cleaning up the DC captain Jemimah Rodrigues and the legendary Marizanne Kapp in consecutive deliveries, reducing the Capitals to a shocking 10/4 .

She finished with astounding figures of 3/27 in her debut match for RCB.

"Still, it has not sunk in yet, but dream debut, definitely. Since IPL started in 2008, I have been an RCB fan, and when WPL started I always wished that someday I would get the chance to play for RCB," she expressed after the match .

The Spell That Sealed the Playoffs

If her debut was impressive, her follow-up performance was definitive. Facing her former team, the Gujarat Giants, in Vadodara on January 19, 2026, RCB needed a win to secure a playoff spot. After Gautami Naik's brilliant 73 took RCB to 178/6, it was over to the bowlers .

Sayali Satghare delivered a stunning new-ball spell that broke the back of the Giants' chase. In her very first over, she castled the dangerous Australian left-hander Beth Mooney with a delivery that skidded back. Two balls later, she induced a mistimed pull from New Zealand's Sophie Devine, who found the fielder at deep midwicket . Giants were reeling at 5/3.

She later returned to remove the well-set skipper Ashleigh Gardner (54), finishing with magnificent figures of 3/21 in her four overs . This performance not only sealed a 61-run victory for RCB but also booked their place in the playoffs and set a new WPL record of six consecutive wins .

The Lethal Partnership with Lauren Bell

One of the key factors behind RCB's success has been the destructive new-ball pair of Sayali Satghare and Lauren Bell. Speaking to RCB Game Day, Satghare highlighted their growing chemistry.

"I enjoy bowling with the new ball. It's the best chance to swing the ball and get some wickets upfront," she said. Underlining her chemistry with Bell, she added, "Actually, my job becomes easy when I bowl with her. And if she bowls so many dot balls, then obviously the batter will try to attack the next over. It gives me a chance to take wickets" .

Domestic Pedigree and Future Prospects

Satghare's WPL heroics are backed by solid domestic performances. Playing for Mumbai in the List A One Day Trophy in 2024, she showcased her all-round abilities by scoring 260 runs in seven matches at an average of 52, including a stunning 77-ball century .

Having already represented India in three ODIs with an impressive economy rate of 4.65, Satghare is knocking on the door for a permanent place in the national side . For now, she remains focused on her role with RCB.

"It's very fun actually, they have a young side, and everyone is gelling well with each other. We are enjoying everyone's success and all the players are happy for the team," she concluded .

With eight wickets from just four games at an economy rate of 7.71, Sayali Satghare is no longer just a replacement player; she is a rising star, and her journey is a testament to the belief that in sports, the script can always be rewritten .
